Porcine Model Used for Acute Lung Injury Research

porcine model for lung researchPorcine has proved to be helpful in establishing the therapeutic effects of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) in reducing the inflammatory response during acute lung injuries.

In a study conducted at the Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, researchers determined that pigs induced with severe traumatic lung injuries had decreased PVR/SVR levels two hours after treatment with MSCs.

This reduction in PVR/SVR ratio in the stem cell treated group of pigs may indicate a reduction in pulmonary vasoconstriction due to the MSCs, which may create a temporary barrier to the leakage of the vascular endothelium which would reduce the pulmonary hemorrhage.

“An effect of MSCs in reducing the inflammatory response to ALI was not evident in this acute period following injury,” the authors wrote in the study, published in the April edition of the FASEB Journal.

“Rather, enhanced stimulation of TNF-α 8 hours post MSC treatment may indicate a signaling mechanism for up regulation of a cellular response to enable tissue repair.”

They concluded that further research is needed into this crucial area of pulmonary study.

Porcine tissues and organs have been useful in a host of other recent studies, from Brigham Young’s cardiac research to an investigation into wound treatment at Rutgers.
