Phytase Super-dosing Improves Iron levels in Pigs & Humans

Super-dosing of phytase in young pigs has been shown to improve their iron levels, according to a study conducted by AB Vista.

Newborn piglets typically receive injected iron supplements, as they are born with low stores of iron and their mothers’ milk is not able to provide the needed iron requirements.

Piglets can easily become anemic without iron supplements at birth. Pigs sometimes receive iron supplementation through plant-based feeds, but the iron is taken up or bound by phytate and is not available to the piglet.

The AB Vista researchers determined that super dosing phytase – along with supplementing iron – shows an opportunity for optimal iron absorption in pigs. This super dose nearly eliminates the phytate levels and allows better iron absorption in young pigs. Therefore, the normal levels of iron in their diet become available to the piglets as well as the iron supplementation.

Human research has determined that decreasing phytate levels in bread decreases the phytate-to-iron ratio, which results in an increased level of iron absorption. This research is beneficial to both pigs and humans in increasing the ability to absorb the proper levels of iron.
